The Coding it Forward Fellowship empowers early-career technologists to innovate in local, state, and federal government offices across the United States.
This specific opportunity is a Design Fellowship in partnership with the State of New Jersey’s Office of Innovation. Applicants to this position must be from New Jersey, have spent a significant amount of time in New Jersey, or currently studying in New Jersey.

Dates: January 12 - March 20, 2026
Pay: $20/hour undergraduate, $25/hour graduate
Commitment: Remote, full-time, 40 hours/week
What We Offer
Professional Programming
We will offer Fellows both synchronous and asynchronous professional development opportunities focused on public interest technology.
One-on-One Mentorship
Fellows will be matched with an experienced technologist in civic tech/public interest tech. You will develop a mentorship relationship curated for your specific professional goals.
In-Person Learning
The program concludes with a gathering in Montgomery, Alabama, to visit the Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Museum and Memorial.
Eligibility Requirements
At the time of your application, you must meet the following requirements to be considered for the Coding it Forward Fellowship starting in January 2026.
- Required Skillset: Design (read more here)
- Work Authorization: You are a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or permanent resident.
- Age: You must be at least 18 years old by January 12, 2026.
- Location: You must be located in the United States for the entire program, January 12 through March 20, 2026.
- Local to New Jersey: In accordance with statewide priorities, this opportunity is specifically designed for individuals from New Jersey or those with strong ties to the state. Only candidates who are from New Jersey, have spent a significant amount of time in New Jersey, or are currently studying in New Jersey will be considered.
- Educational Background: You are enrolled in, or have recently graduated from, a bachelor’s, master’s, professional, or doctoral degree program at an accredited educational institution in the United States or an overseas equivalent.
- Your graduation date is no earlier than May 1, 2024.
- If you are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program, you must be a junior or senior (based on years completed or expected graduation date) to be eligible to apply. Freshmen and Sophomores are not eligible for this opportunity.
- Students with an associate degree or those who have completed bootcamp or certificate programs are not eligible for this opportunity.
